Romania was hit by a 5.1 degree earthquake

A 5.1 degrees on a Richter scale earthquake was registered on Wednesday in the Black Sea, reaching also Bucharest, Romania's Capital city, at 10.49 am., local time. According to the National Institute for Earth Physics (INFP), the earthquake epicenter was in the Black Sea region, at 6 km depth, but it was felt in Bucharest and Constanţa, too.

INFP director, Gheorghe Marmureanu, said it was a surface quake and it would not have consequences.

According to Marius Craiu, specialized researcher at the Institute for Earth Physics, the quake’s epicenter was situated at the border between Romania and Bulgaria, at a depth  of 20 km, with a magnitude of 5.5 degrees on Richter scale.

In the central area the intensity was 7 degrees on Richter scale, according to Craiu.

The tremor was felt also in Bulgaria, 30 km south of the Romanian seaside resort Mangalia.

INFP's scientific director, Mircea Radulian,  said there will be followed by other seismic waves, weaker in intensity, since it was a crustal (surface) temblor in an active area from a seismological point of view.
