Jose Manuel Barroso to win the majority of the European Parliament votes
The European Commission president Jose Manuel Barroso gained a second five-year term on Wednesday. A total of 382 deputies voted for the European leader, while 219 opposed.
The EP assembly's 736 deputies were called to vote in the French city of Strasbourg. There were 117 abstentions.
Barroso’s second term as President had already been endorsed unanimously by the EU heads of state and heads of government at the European Council meeting in June.
Barroso is to travel to Strasbourg in two weeks to be grilled by the parliament, which is then expected to vote on the second term for a leader already formally endorsed by the 27 governments of the Europen Union
