Censorship The projections of the movie “Francesca” directed by Bobby Paunescu, having actress Monica Barladeanu in the role of the main character, were forbidden at the Venice Film Festival.
The decision tops the two Romanians in the club of the censored artists, along with the famous writer Salman Rushdie, also present at the premier of the film.
Nobody thought Friday night, during the premier of the Venice Festival that the so much appreciated movie would be censored by the Venice Cinema Association.
At the premier was also present write Salman Rushdie, whose book “Satanic Verses” had been forbidden by ayatollah Khomeini and, afterward in several other Muslim countries. The writer, sentenced to death by the ayatollah, came at the movie premier as a friend of Monica Barladeanu.
The censorship of movie “Francesca” was a result of the pressures coming from Alessandra Mussolini, the niece of the former fascist dictator of Italy, and the mayor of Verona, Flavio Tosi. Te two considered themselves insulted by some of the movie characters’ lines and instituted proceedings against Bobby Paunescu.
