PSD and PDL, equal results after preliminary polls

Partial results show PSD and PDL parties won most of the votes in European Parliament elections. Official results released early Monday give the leftist Social Democracy Party about 30.6% of the vote and the centrist Liberal Democratic Party approximately 29.7%.

Romania will be represented by five parties and an independent candidate in the European Parliament. Vote attendance was much more consistent in the countryside (29%) then in the urban medium (16.2 %).

The first stage of elections for the European Parliament, where Romanian people could vote simultaneously with the other EU citizens, was marked by a low voting attendance. At 7p.m. the national vote attendance was of 21.63 %.

PSD and PDL parties are estimated to have obtained equal results, according to the first figures released by Insomar and CCSB exit-polls.

Unlike the 2008 parliamentarian elections, yesterday’s elections offered two novelties: both PRM and an independent candidate (Elena Basescu) managed to pass over the electoral threshold.
