Lucian Croitoru lost confidence vote in the Parliament

The Romanian designated prime minister Lucian Croitoru lost the confidence vote in the Parliament Wednesday. His government was rejected by 250 lawmakers, leaving the country stuck in a political deadlock.

Only 189 lawmakers voted for Croitoru. The government needed 236 votes to be instated.

Croitoru, told lawmakers before the vote the country needs a stable government, with full powers to carry on with IMF-required reforms, adding a potential halt of the country's agreement with the IMF would bear serious consequences for its external credibility, more so than if the deal had never been signed.

Romania faces a deep political instability after the government collapsed in a no-confidence vote mid-October, and is in desperate need of the following two tranches of a EUR20 billion IMF-led loan package.

Lacking a proper government, Romania may face a delay on the IMF loan disbursements.
