Natural gas import, 77 % drop in the 1st quarter

The quantity of natural gas imported bz the Romanian state in the first six months of the year has dropped by 77 % comparative to 2008 same period, according to the data released today by the National Institute of Statistics (INS).

Thus, the gas import in this period was equivalent to 496 tones of petrol, representing 10 % of the total consumption of 4,933 tep.

The main cause of the gas import drop is the drastic cut of gas consumption (by 18 %) in this period, as a consequence of the economic downturn.

Also, the internal production went 6 % down.

According to Petrom Co., one of the biggest two internal gas producers, by the end of the year, gas consumption would decrease by 20 percents.

Nevertheless, INS data show primary energy resources have decreased by 19.9 % in the first six months of the year, as a consequence of imports’ serious drop.
