The former captain of the Romanian national football team was recruited at the age of 18, 3 months and 16 days
According to the documents of the National Council for the Study of Security Archives, Gheorghe Popescu was working for the Security with the code name “Petrescu”.
His carrier as an informer began at February 25, 1986, when he was playing for Universitatea Craiova team. According to CNSAS archive, from 1986 to 1989, Gheorghe Popescu released nine written informative notes. The former captain of the national football team denies any collaboration with the Security.
