Open letter to Mr. Duane C. Butcher [şi variantă în limba română]

This is an open letter to Mr. Duane C. Butcher, Chargé d'affaires ad interim at the Embassy of the United States of America in Bucharest. [varianta în limba română, mai jos]

Dear Mr. Duane C. Butcher, 

my name is Malina Chirea and I am born, raised and living in Romania. I am 30 years old and a social entrepreneur. 

Many of my friends and including my father, are immigrants. I myself, refused to leave my country. Although I am well aware of the problems we are dealing with in this country - lack of education is something which fuels corruption, so often found in Romanian institutions - I prefered to stay here and change the my country into something better. 

Nowadays, I am confused and thinking that maybe I made a bad decision to stay here. I am also scared at the thought that I may have to leave my country and my family, in order to live in a country were Human Rights are respected. 

Mr. Butcher, at the present moment you are the official representative of the United States of America and I would like to bring to your attention the abuses made by  an American company, called Chevron, in my country. 

On the early morning of December the 2nd, before sunrise, over 250 gendarmes entered the village of Pungesti, destroyed private property, arrested 50 villagers, beat 2 people up to hospitalization, closed down all access roads, refused the access of the press, didn't let the children of the village go to school. 

At the present moment, over 1000 gendarmes are guarding the village from anyone who could help villagers. People are scared and have threatened to burn down their homes. You can find out more information on the matter, here. There is also a video in English which will give you a better picture of what happened. You can access it here (the music is a bit dramatic, but that shouldn't disturb you from watching the footage). 

This severe violation of the Human Rights was done because the villagers of Pungesti didn't want Chevron to exploit the lands of their village. 

You see, nobody tried to talk to the villagers. The mayor simply gave all the approvals and left on a long holiday - I hear he is not back yet. 

As you may know, Romanian villagers live of the land. The prospect of losing their clean water has turned them into desperate people with nothing more to lose. 

They have mobilized, raised signatures to fire the mayor, made a poll in the village which showed that 98% of its population did not want this kind of exploitation. They even participated at every village meeting in order to express their point of view and built a resistance camp next to the place where Chevron was planning to work. That camp, built on private property was demolished by gendarmes on the morning of December 2nd. 

Chevron has been a terrible accomplice of the whole situation: while gendarmes were beating villagers, the employees of Chevron were setting their machines on a land belonging to the village. While gendarmes were shutting the village down, Chevron issued a press release stating that they are starting works on the shale exploitation in  the village. 

I know Chevron is a very important company in the United States. Is this how American companies make business? Do they treat the American people in the same way they treated the Romanians from Pungesti? And if not, what is different? 

And please tell me sir, should I continue my work in Romania or simply leave? If you were a Romanian, what would you do? 

Moreover, the Romanian Parliament is planning to pass a law which will give corporations the right to evict any person from their own land and their own home. If the right to property becomes dispensable when a corporation wants the ground from under our homes, where should we go? What would you do, Mr. Butcher?

Aceasta este o scrisoare deschisă către domnul Duane C. Butcher, 

Chargé d'affaires ad interim al Ambasadei Statelor Unite ale Americii la Bucuresti

Stimate domnule Duane C. Butcher,

Numele meu este Mălina Chirea şi m-am născut, crescut şi trăiesc în România. Am 30 de ani şi sunt antreprenor social.

Mulţi dintre prietenii mei si inclusiv tatăl meu, sunt imigranţi. Eu am refuzat să părăseasc ţara mea. Deşi sunt conştientă de problemele cu care se confruntă această ţară - lipsa de educaţie este combustibilul perfect pentru corupţie, atât de des găsită în instituţiile româneşti - am preferat să stau aici şi să schimb ţara în mai bine.

În prezent, sunt confuză şi mă gândesc că poate am luat o decizie proastă să rămân aici. Sunt, de asemenea, speriată la gândul că aş putea fi nevoită să părăsesc ţara şi familia mea, pentru a trăi într-o ţară au fost drepturile omului sunt respectate.

Dl Butcher, în momentul de faţă sunteţi reprezentantul oficial al Statelor Unite ale Americii şi aş dori să aduc în atenţia dumneavoastră abuzurile făcute de o companie americană, numită Chevron, în ţara mea.

In dimineaţa zilei de 2 decembrie, înainte de răsărit, peste 250 de jandarmi au intrat în satul Pungesti, au distrus proprietate privată, au arestat 50 de săteni, au bătut 2 persoane până la spitalizare,  au închis toate drumurile de acces, a refuzat accesul presei şi nu au lăsat copiii din sat să meargă la şcoală.

În prezent, peste 1000 de jandarmi păzesc satul pentru că cineva care i-ar putea ajuta săteni. Oamenii sunt speriaţi şi au ameninţat că îşi ard casele. Puteţi afla mai multe informaţii pe această temă, aici. Există, de asemenea, un video în limba engleză, care vă va oferi o imagine mai bună a ceea ce s-a întâmplat. Îl puteţi accesa aici (muzica este un pic dramatică, dar nu ar trebui să vă deranjeze de la vizionarea filmul).

Această încălcare gravă a drepturilor omului a fost făcută deoarece sătenii din Pungesti nu au vrut ca Chevron  exploateze terenurile din satul lor.

Vedeţi dumnevoastră, nimeni nu a încercat să vorbească cu sătenii. Primarul pur şi simplu a dat toate aprobările şi a plecat într-o vacanţă lungă - Am auzit că nu s-a întors.

După cum probabil ştiţi, sătenii români trăiesc din munca pământului, Perspectiva de a-şi pierde apa curată i-a transformat în oameni disperaţi, care nu mai au nimic de pierdut.

Ei s-au mobilizat, au strâns semnături pentru a concedia primarul, au făcut un sondaj în sat care a arătat că 98% din populaţie nu a vrut acest tip de exploatare. Ei chiar au participat la fiecare întâlnire din sat, cu scopul de a-şi exprima punctul de vedere şi au construit o tabără de rezistenţă lângă locul unde Chevron planificase lucrarea. Tabăra respectivă, construită pe o proprietate privată a fost demolată de jandarmi în dimineaţa zilei de 02 decembrie.

Chevron a fost un complice teribil de întreaga situaţie: în timp ce jandarmii băteau săteni, angajaţii Chevron îşi stabilieau echipamentele pe un teren aparţinând comunei. În timp ce jandarmii  închideau satul, Chevron a emis un comunicat de presă care să ateste că incep lucrările pentru exploatarea de gaze de şist în localitate.

Ştiu că Chevron este o companie foarte importantă în Statele Unite ale Americii. Este aceasta modul in care companiile americane fac afaceri? Tratează ei oamenii din Statele Unite ale Americii in acelaşi mod in care au fost trataţi românii de la Pungesti? Şi dacă nu, ce este diferit?

Şi vă rog să-mi spuneţi domnule, eu ar trebui să îmi continui munca în România sau ar trebui pur şi simplu să plec? Dacă aţi fi român, dumneavoastră ce aţi face?

Mai mult decât atât, Parlamentul român este pe punctul de a trece o lege care va oferi corporaţiilor dreptul de a evacua orice persoană din ţara lor şi propria lor casă. În cazul în care dreptul de proprietate devine factultativ atunci când o corporatie doreşte pământul de sub casele noastre, unde ar trebui să mergem? Dumneavostră ce aţi face, d-le Butcher?
