History and development

The United Arab Emirates is a federation of seven emirates Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Dubai, Fujairah, Ras Al-Khaimah, Sharjah and Umm Al-Quwain, located in the eastern part of the Arabian Peninsula, on the coast of the Persian Gulf, but also bordering the Gulf of Oman

Arabian Peninsula has been inhabited since ancient times. The area in which the United Arab Emirates now lies has always attracted the interest of sailors and traders because of its strategic position along the trade routes between Europe, the Middle East and the Far East. Indian and Chinese merchants, then European, Portuguese, Dutch and English merchants were attracted to these trade routes, while the coastal desert remained home to the Bedouin, for whom Abu Dhabi became an important centre.

In the 19th century, the British Empire signed agreements with the emirates, which retained their individuality, with the British undertaking to defend the
region by sea and land.

Pearl fishing became the main industry and source of income for the population for decades. But the development of pearl farming by the Japanese changed things dramatically.

Oil enters the scene

Oil exploration began around the 1930s. The first commercial field was discovered in 1958 and within a few years oil exports from Abu Dhabi began. The Emirates joined OPEC in 1967.

A new beginning

Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan became ruler of the Abu Dhabi Emirate in 1966. His main focus was the creation of an oil revenue fund to finance economic development and infrastructure, schools, hospitals and roads. Simultaneously,
Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum of Dubai adopted the same policy in order to raise the standard of living of its people.

Independence

In 1968, Great Britain announced its withdrawal from the region. In this context, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan began the process of setting up a federation of Gulf states, initiating nego-
tiations with the leaders of the other emirates and with Bahrain and Qatar. Eventually,
the leaders of six emirates agreed, and the formal establishment of the United Arab Emirates took place on 2 December 1971. The following year, the seventh emirate, Ras
Al-Khaimah, joined the federation. Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan became President of the Federation.

Transforming into a leading economy

The exploitation of hydrocarbon resources, some of the richest in the world, has transformed the United Arab Emirates, and the country’s population has risen from poverty to one of the highest per capita income levels in the world.

A new transition is now taking place in the Emirates, towards a future-oriented economy, less dependent on the exploitation of natural resources, centred on the most modern and innovative technologies. Statistics show that the UAE is one of the world’s leading economic and financial centres.
